Having a slow, unhurried, and intentional morning can be a privilege. Not everyone has the time, space, or circumstances to begin the day without rushing.
Work schedules, caregiving, and other responsibilities often shape how mornings unfold. But I believe slowness can still be found in small ways.
A slow and intentional morning routine isn’t about being unproductive or ignoring responsibilities. It’s about choosing what matters and giving your full attention to those things, instead of rushing through a long list.
It’s about remembering to notice the wildflowers growing by the sidewalk, or the fresh coat of paint on a neighbour’s wall, instead of just moving past it.
Why a Slow and Intentional Morning Matters
Slow living is often portrayed as having the perfect aesthetic for your brews and a cozy reading nook. But, it’s more than just that, or simpler than that.
At first, it might feel unfamiliar or even uncomfortable, especially if you’re used to constant hustle and urgency. That’s why beginning with a simple morning routine that’s slow and intentional can be such a gentle way to start embracing a slower pace of life.
I truly believe that slow mornings are a kind of wealth. They are precious in a way that money cannot measure.
I’m deeply aware of the impermanence of things, which makes me want to savour these mornings even more. And I acknowledge that it’s a privilege to have this time, as I don’t have a job that demands an early or rushed start.
Quiet time in the morning is also a way to nurture your inner world. It helps in clearing the mind to make space for the day.
As nature doesn’t rush the sunrise, a slow morning lets you sync with that natural pace. This alignment can bring a sense of balance and ease.
So, when you move with intention, even small and simple acts like pouring tea, or lighting the candle can be meaningful. You may fail to notice it but these simple acts or rituals that we take for granted are often the ones that’re holding your life together.
7 Things to Do for an Intentional Morning Routine

The rituals shared here are all simple and time-friendly. A morning routine doesn’t need to be an elaborate 12-step checklist.
Sometimes, just one mindful ritual carried out with presence and joy is enough to shift your day.
I’ve listed seven gentle rituals, but feel free to choose only what feels right for you.
1. Open the curtains and let the sunlight creep in
The first thing I do in the morning is open the curtains. I like to do it slowly, letting the daylight filter in little by little. It’s soothing about watching the room shift from shadows to light.
The sunlight wakes me up naturally. I feel so happy to see the sun especially on cold winter days and gloomy monsoon days.
After you wake up, gently draw the curtains and allow natural light to enter your room.
Let it wake you slowly, without urgency.
Notice the way the light softens the space around you. Pause for a moment to take it in before you move on with your morning.
2. Light an incense or candle intentionally

For an intentional morning, I choose to light an incense and diya after a mindful shower.
Sometimes it’s sandalwood, sometimes lavender, sometimes a candle with a soft floral note.
I have been practising this ritual since 2016, where I light incense as a part of my morning Pooja (worship). I light it with a small sense of ceremony welcoming the day with gratitude.
So, when you light the candle, do it slowly and intentionally with a smile on your face. Notice the shift in energy and how grounded and calm you feel.
It’s a small thing, but it sets a positive tone for the hours ahead.
3. Walk barefoot around your house or your terrace, better if you have grass

Let your feet touch the floor as a part of an intentional morning routine. Walking barefoot has numerous benefits for our physical health and mental health.
It’s a conscious way to slow down and bring awareness into the present moment.
It is a grounding ritual to physically connect you with Mother Earth, especially if you have access to natural green grass.
Also, did you know that there are several ways you can walk? My favourite is walking on heels with toes upwards. It’s a part of morning yoga practise, where you are bringing in intentionality along with health benefits.
When I have the chance to walk on grass, it’s even better. Otherwise, I practice it at home on the cool tiles.
I’m walking, but I am actually slowing down and finding tiny ways to be mindful.
4. Mindfully brew your morning tea or coffee
Making my morning coffee is one of my favourite parts of the morning. It’s okay to take your time.
I chant few affirmations as I wait for the water to heat. I bless my first cup of coffee with a small intention for the day.
When I pour the water, I watch the colour change. I notice the aroma rising, and take a deep inhale, feeling joy in that simple moment.
I don’t rush to take the first sip. I let it cool just enough, holding the cup in my hands for warmth.
On some mornings, when I need to leave early for work, I drink my coffee with breakfast and skip this quiet ritual. I miss it, but I find comfort in knowing I can recreate the same pause in the evening when I unwind.
5. Spend time in your favourite corner

Spending time in your favourite corner is part of a slow and intentional morning routine because it creates a deliberate pause before the day begins.
You’re choosing the space instead of reaching for screens or diving in to tasks.
I am deeply grateful for the days when I can spend a few quiet minutes in my favourite corner, with my cup of coffee and a book in hand. It’s a space that feels safe and comforting.
I don’t do much there. Sometimes I sit quietly and look outside. Other times, I simply hold my cup of tea and enjoy the warmth in my hands.
Some mornings, my cats join me. They wander over for a quick stroll outside, and I watch them with a soft smile. These small moments make the morning feel whole.
Even if the rest of the day gets busy, you’ve already given yourself a few minutes of slowness and grounding.
6. Journal your thoughts
Another ritual for your slow and intentional morning routine is to write few sentences or few pages in your journal.
Morning pages is a great way to start your day when you wake up with your mind full. Otherwise, you can stick to few sentences of gratitude, or writing your intention for the day .
To be honest, journaling is something I often save for my night routine. In the mornings, I keep it light to avoid it feeling like a chore. I write only when I feel like it, letting the words flow without pressure.
For me, the point of a slow and intentional morning is to approach each ritual with presence, not resistance. Journaling is no different. It’s there to serve me, not the other way around.
Here’s a guide to help you start a journaling routine.
7. Greet your loved ones with a smile
Make it a quiet habit to greet your loved ones with a smile each morning. It’s a simple, intentional way to show that you’re truly present with them.
Rather than muttering a half-asleep “good morning” while staring at your phone or walking past, try to pause. Look them in the eyes.
Let your expression say, I’m glad to see you.
A smile can make all the difference.
This small gesture can shift the energy in the home. It reminds everyone, yourself included, that connection matters, even when you are irritated with them.
The point of having a slow and intentional morning routine is not to abandon everything and do nothing. It’s about doing less, but with more intention. You can still be productive while embracing slow living.
In fact, starting the day at a gentler pace often helps you focus better and work more efficiently later.
