As we grow older, life shifts from the freedom of play to the weight of consequence. Childhood was marked by presence and living simply, where joy was found in small things and tomorrow did not trouble today. But adulthood teaches us to look ahead, to calculate risks, to carry responsibilities. Somewhere in that transition, we forget how to make life simple.
We fill our days with deadlines, expectations, and obligations until our minds feel cluttered and our routines complicated. What once felt effortless now requires deliberate intention. To make life simple is not about abandoning responsibility, but about softening how we hold it.
Yet, the definition of a simple life is not universal. It varies from person to person:
- For one, it may mean living with fewer possessions and embracing minimalism.
- For another, it may mean having time to nurture family, relationships, and intimacy.
- For someone else, it might be mental clarity and learning how to declutter thoughts, reduce stress, and find peace within.
- For many, it is balance to do less, but doing it with presence.
This is why attempts to make life simple look different for each of us.
Simplicity is not about following one formula but about noticing what feels unnecessarily complicated in your life and gently letting it go.
Why Are Rituals Important to Make Life Simple

One of the most practical ways to make life simple is by anchoring yourself in small, deliberate rituals.
Rituals work to keep you from drifting into overwhelm and helping you return to what truly matters.
I’ve often noticed that when life feels complicated, it isn’t because of one big thing but a hundred small ones piling up. The thoughts I can’t switch off, tasks I keep postponing, or expectations I quietly carry.
For a long time, I believed simplicity meant stripping everything away, but I’ve come to see it differently. Simplicity, for me, is about creating little anchors in the day.
These gentle rituals that help me breathe and feel more at ease with myself. Some of these rituals clear the clutter in my mind, some help me grow in small but steady ways, some keep my days more organized, and others remind me to care for my own wellbeing.
They don’t solve everything, but they make the weight of life easier to carry and that, to me, is what it means to make life simple.
Simplifying Your Thoughts to Make Life Simple
1 Start your day with a calming thought. Perhaps, a quote or an affirmation. I started my day today with this positive reminder,
“One of the greatest awakenings comes when you realize that not everybody changes. Some people never change. And that’s their journey. It’s not yours to try to fix them”.
2. Before starting a new task, take a deep breath and silently say: “I got this.”
3. Once a week, empty your brain onto paper. It maybe lists, fragments, feelings. Then sort into three piles: to act on, to note, to release.
4. When faced with a messy tangle of thoughts, pause and ask: “Will this matter in a week, a month, a year?” Often, stress shrinks.
5. Play a calming sound every morning as a part of your morning ritual, for a positive start to the day. It can be a prayer song, mantras, affirmation, or sounds of bells and chimes.
6. Don’t waste time thinking about what others are thinking. Simply Let Them. Whether you worry about it or not people are judgemental and once you accept that, life becomes much more peaceful.
7. Practise letting go everything that’s holding you back. It may be self-doubt; it may be regrets or everything that you think is going wrong in your life. When you let go, you redefine your life by making space for things that matter.
8. Notice the little things in life that bring you joy. It’s such a privilege to have things to be grateful for each day.
9. Everytime you’re caught up in your thoughts, simply bring yourself to the present moment. Snap your fingers, shake your head, wiggle your toes and repeat, “Come back, come back, come back”.
10. Whenever someone is sad, we often give them advices. Consider yourself to be your best friend, and cheer yourself up like you would your best friend.

Little Practices that Keep Life Simple and Organized
11. Place only today’s essentials (keys, wallet, phone, water bottle) on one shelf near the door. By choosing one “home” for your day’s items, you remove morning clutter and searching.
12. Each morning, write down just one non-negotiable task. Keep it visible on your desk or tucked into your pocket. Let it guide your day, even when other tasks pull you.
13. Pick one simple, nourishing breakfast to repeat on weekdays. For me it’s making poha in 10 minutes. Hence, decision fatigue drops, and mornings open up.
14. At the end of the workday, jot down three things: what’s done, what’s still pending, and what’s no longer needed. It declutters your to-do list and helps you plan your next day better.
15. Leave your phone to charge in another room as it can disrupt your focus.
16. Place tomorrow’s clothes and bag ready. It frees your morning mind.
17. A tidy wallet can feel like a tidy mind, so make sure you empty your wallet of unnecessary receipts, tickets, and anything extra.
18. Use technology to help you automate your tasks.
19. Write down your bigger goals and keep it where you can see, so that you don’t lose focus from the bigger goals.
20. Always finish one task before you start another.
Wellbeing Rituals for a Lighter, Simpler Life
21. Be a child again and dance to a song every single day. It helps you clear your mind from clutter and brings a smile to your face.
22. Stretch, stretch, stretch.
23. As a part of my morning ritual, I practise Pranayama and meditation to feel energized.
24. Remind yourself that you don’t have to be productive all the time. Allow yourself to slow down and simply do nothing.
25. Practice active listening when you’re present with your loved ones. It’s a gift that’ll make your relationship stronger.
26. For your wellbeing, it’s important to be clear of your priorities. It’s okay to start saying no to things that are unnecessary.
27. Practise the habit of disconnecting from work as you unwind and relax in the evening.
28. Don’t let yourself be sucked into other people’s problems. It’s natural to be helpful to people especially in their tough times. But, save yourself from being consumed by it unless you can do anything to change the entire situation for them.
29. Communicate. It’ll save you from a lot of stress and misunderstandings that may disrupt your wellbeing.
30. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by stuff, take a nap.

34. Make a habit of reviewing your day or reviewing your week. This personal self-reflection will guide you forward in life.
35. Clear one space each month as a part of your decluttering routine.
36. Carry out a life-audit once every quarter to identify the changes you need to make life simple.
37. Preparation before you do anything is a valuable habit, whether it’s a class presentation, or a business meeting. It helps you be more confident.
38. When you’re not working, try to be off-screen and pause mindless scrolling for as long as possible. Let your mind and body feel recharged on your day-off.
39. Be open to having a mentor in life as it’s a great advantage. So, find a mentor who can share their valuable knowledge and life advices to make your life richer.
40. Don’t let setbacks in life deter you from your goals. Sometimes progress can be invisible and slow. Keep moving. Keep growing.
Final Thoughts
If life has started to feel heavier than it should, maybe it’s not because you’re doing too little, but because you’re carrying too much.
All you need are few small, deliberate choices that bring ease to your thoughts, clarity to your days, and balance to your wellbeing.
Start with one, keep it gentle, and let it grow into a rhythm that works for you. The more you practice, the more you’ll see that simplicity is a way of living you can step into right now.
